Hire centres closed yesterday as safety boats prohibited in F8. Later on was sailable but cut on foot painfull so not fussed. Today less wind so started 106l/5.1 m then 4.8m and big board worked well in gusts as wind chop smaller than windier days and carried through lulls. Hannes found me 84 l before newbie who reserved it arrived and 84l/4.5m worked well. Newbie came to claim board so tried 92l but too big as 4 m wind by then so packed up.
That was final sail of 8 day stay. I caught last week of high wind fortnight where ever day was F7 sailing at times and 4 days closed for part day as F8.
Conditions are small wind chop usually less than 1 foot but 2 feet in strong winds. It is very gusty with rapid changes in strength and direction: on windy days maybe 1 min of F7, 30secs F5, with occasional 30 secs F8+ or F2. I don't know about lighter days but from regulars hear similar but scaled down. Paliakestro and Agkathias (where we stayed) are quiet with good restaurants with some folks staying out till dawn. Many people are returnees which says a lot. If you want a good Crete holiday with some windsurfing added then great location and people. If main aim is windsurfing there will be better locations.
PS Freak winsurfing were very good and tried hard to get me boards I had not booked. Rescue service excellent and they constantly check who is out and accountable. Both centres close in F8 which some may find frustrating but port authorities prevent launch of safety boats and wind can increase 1 to 2 forces in seconds.
